Governor Jennifer Granholm gives recognition to Hispanic publication |

Jennifer Granholm gave recognition to the only
publication dedicated to women in Michigan at the Hispanic Business Expo, which
took place on September 2, 2004. While visiting different booths at the Expo
Granholm directed her attention to the Latino Detroit booth.
As the governor browsed through the different publications offered by Latino
Media she was very surprised to see part of her administrative staff on the
cover of From Woman to Woman. She was also very excited to see a feature story
on her Latina staff and in recognition of the publication Governor Jennifer
Granholm autographed the publication. The governor emphasized and referred to
the expansive growth of the Hispanic population and how important it is for
them to be able to rely on means of communication that are dedicated to women
such as From Woman to Woman.
From Women to Women is produced by Latino Media a Hispanic company with 99% of
its employees being of Hispanic descent. Its main product is Latino Press a
weekly publication that is the only audited Hispanic publication in Michigan
and consists of 44 pages. They also publish a publication dedicated to sports
called Latino Deportes and one to entertainment called Furia Latina. Both of
these publications are inserts in Latino Press. They also produce Hispanic
radio programs which are transmitted through different AM stations.
Latino Media is one of the fastest growing Hispanic communication companies in
Michigan since its owner, Elias Gutierrez, started the company in 1993. Latino
Media and its owner have always been proud to be leaders in the community that
it was developed and in its communication fi eld. In 2004 Elias Gutierrez was
named one of the most Infl uential Hispanics in Michigan. Latino Media produces
Latino Press, De Mujer a Mujer, Furia Latina, Latino Deportes, Southwest
Detroit Business Directory and Oakland County Hispanic Directory.

On Friday October 8th, 2004, the
Latino Cultural Educational Foundation held its Annual Recognition Luncheon to
honor community leaders who have greatly contributed to the mission statement
of the organization and to the Latino community at large.
This year’s honorees were Elias Gutierrez, President of Latino Media, who
received the Community Leader Award; Mr. Enrique Carrillo, Vice President of
Public Affairs who received the Community Service Award; and receiving the
Community Accomplishment Award was Ms. Blanca Almanza, Vice President of
Corporate Research, Planning and Development at SER METRO-DETROIT.
The event was attended by several community organizations, including LA SED,
SER METRO-DETROIT, Latino Media, Mexicantown Community Development Corporation,
Global Village, Holy Redeemer Church, St. Gabriel Parish, and St. Hedwig’s
church, among many other organizations. Also present were several county and
city employees, including Mr. Frederick Feliciano from the Mayor’s offi ce, Mr.
Alex Romero from the Wayne County Executive’s offi ce, and Ms. Pat Oviedo, from
State Representative Steve Tobocman’s offi ce. The Latino Cultural Educational
Foundation took this opportunity to introduce its new website, which can be
viewed at www.latinocef.org. In addition, the new organization’s brochure was
also introduced. The LCEF was honored to have the Daimler Chrysler Corporation
Fund, Comerica Bank, GM, Bank One, DTE Energy, Allstate, and SER METRO-DETROIT
as this year’s Annual Recognition Luncheon corporate sponsors. Comcast
Communications, the Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and the Archdiocese
of Detroit were some of the table sponsors for the event. The keynote speaker
for the Luncheon was Ms. Sarah Norat- Phillips from the WDWB-TV, who gave an
inspirational speech about overcoming adversity.
This year’s luncheon was chaired by Ms. Carmen Thurman, President of Cam-Tre
Innovations. Ivonne Hernandez, Executive Director for the Latino Cultural
Educational Foundation, Ms. Doris Perez, Chair of the LCEF Board of Directors,
and MS. Jackie Rosa Stallworth, from the Social Security Administration and
also member of the LCEF Board of Directors, also formed part of the planning
committee for the Luncheon.
The Latino Cultural Educational Foundation wishes to thank all its sponsors for
